Sclerotherapy
- (Treatment of Spider Veins)
I think you should know that I am a Board Certified
Cosmetic Surgeon and I have been performing sclerotherapy,
the treatment of spider veins for 30 years.
I perform all
of the treatments! There are no assistant surgeons,
there are no ghost surgeons, there are no interns, residents
or fellows who will perform the treatment other than
myself. I consider this statement vitally important
and wish to relate it to you, as this is a prevailing
fear among many patients.
I feel that there
is another issue, which deserves considerable attention.
If you are contemplating treatment for your spider veins,
or any other treatment for that matter, you should be
aware how often your surgeon performs the procedure.
Is this a procedure he performs regularly or not at
all? Although frequency does not necessarily denote
competency, I feel you should be aware that I perform
this procedure very, very often.
Sclerotherapy
is one of the most common procedures performed in my
practice and during an office session I perform five
to ten sclerotherapy procedures in each session! This
has continued each day, each week, month after month,
for several years. I think you can derive confidence
from this statement.
Venous
Disease and Sclerotherapy
The following facts will provide you with information
on spider veins and their treatment by Sclerotherapy.
However, before extending you that information, I would
like to present some basic facts on venous disease in
general.
Varicose Veins
are largely a hereditary condition, which results in
cosmetic disfigurement and mild-to-moderate aching.
Around 75% of all cases can be treated non-surgically,
including many patients with saphenous varicosities.
The other 25% require limited surgery for the best possible
outcome.
Telangiectasia
of the legs (spider veins) have been emphatically shown,
by major marketing surveys, to be a major cosmetic concern
to sufferers. The time is past when women will accept
being told, “not to worry” about spider
veins. There is no magic to eliminating them. However,
elimination of this condition is possible by a physician
with the knowledge, skill and willingness to perform
the treatment.
Deep Venous Insufficiency
is the most serious of the chronic vein diseases. 80%
of cases can be helped with conservative therapy. For
the other severe cases, exciting new developments in
vascular surgery have made reconstruction of damaged
deep veins a practical reality.

Telangiectasis
(spider veins) And it’s Treatment
Telangiectasis (spider veins) is a very common problem
particularly affecting women. Not only is the problem
a very common one but I have also found it to be a major
cosmetic concern to the patients affected. Thankfully,
they do not pose any major health problems, although
they are sometimes the source of mild discomfort. Almost
all patients find them personally unsightly and go to
an enormous extent to camouflage them. It also causes
almost every patient to refrain from wearing bathing
suits or shorts in public and to use tinted stockings
while wearing a dress.
Today a treatment
called Sclerotherapy is successfully being used to correct
this most unwanted condition of spider veins of the
legs.

How
the Treatment Works
The treatment takes place during the course of a normal
office visit and takes approximately 15 minutes. I begin
by having your legs prepped and cleansed with an alcohol
solution and then I approach the areas of the spider
veins with a very tiny needle and inject a small amount
of solution directly into the spider vein. This is done
in several areas of both legs during the course of each
treatment. The solution will then displace the blood
in the vein and cause it to blanch or turn white. The
end result is that the solution causes the vessel to
become irritated and swell shut prohibiting the blood
from re-entering the vein.
Please bear in
mind that each spider vein may require several sessions
but they will disappear within three to six weeks time
after the treatment begins.

The
Results of Sclerotherapy Treatment
I am happy to report that sclerotherapy has been one
of the most successful treatment modalities of my entire
practice. I have hundreds of patients undergoing sclerotherapy
treatment and we are able to show improvement very rapidly,
almost in every case. At the time of your initial consultation
I will evaluate your particular problem and give you
a more specific guideline as to the time and extent
of the therapy required for you.
