Blepharoplasty - Surgery of the Eyelids
Eyelid surgery is a very, very common form of facial cosmetic surgery, both alone and in conjunction with other forms of rejuvenation surgery such as a Face Lift or Rhinoplasty.

In the cosmetic surgery world it is often said with regards to the aging process that. . . “We can turn back the clock, but we can’t stop the ticking.” . . . and as the clock keeps ticking the eyes, or to be more exact the eyelids, are usually the first areas to be affected. What happens is that both men and women start to notice an overhang of the upper lid skin giving the eye a smaller appearance. Women may also notice that it is becoming more difficult to apply makeup to the upper eyes. In the lower lids we’ve all commonly seen those bags and bulges and excess skin which give the entire face a sad and tired look. Those bags, which in reality are fat herniations, eventually become noticeable in all of us and can occur as early as sixteen years of age!!!

Eyelid surgery usually takes about one hour and once again is performed in our office surgical suite. In this operation, incisions are made in the lower lid just beneath the lower eyelashes and the upper eyelid in the mid-eyelid crease (I’ll show you exactly where during your consultation). The excess eyelid skin and the excess fat are removed and then the areas are meticulously sutured with a fine surgical thread. The post operative time in the recovery room is very abbreviated, there are no bandages and the sutures are removed as early as the second post operative day.

Recovery from Blepharoplasty is quite brief, in fact if the upper eyelids are done alone you can return to work in approximately two or three days. The same is true if the lower lids are done alone. If, however, both the upper and lower eyelids were done, I would estimate your return to work in four to six days.

Also keep in mind if excess skin is especially troublesome in the lower eyelids, I might follow the surgical procedure with a Chemical Peel in three months. This will maximize the elimination of wrinkles and impart a very smooth appearance to your skin.

We’ve all heard that the eyes are the window to the soul and throughout my professional career; my Blepharoplasty patients have been among the most satisfied of all patients. It is a beneficial operation, the downtime is relative short, it is more or less pain-free and it truly makes the face come alive!
