Chin Augmentation with Rhinoplasty

Chin Augmentation
I’d like to refer to Chin Augmentation as something we refer to as “Profile-Plasty”. It is most often combined with the performance of Rhinoplasty and by building up the chin; we take away from the roundness and often chubbiness of the face to produce an overall more aesthetic result. As are all of our cosmetic procedures . . . this is office based . . . with a very quick recovery time of 2 to 3 days and produces excellent results in our patients.

This is performed by a small incision underneath the chin, which is virtually undetectable and there are several choices we can use to implant and build up the chin, all of which are perfectly safe and have been tested over the years.

The shape of your nose makes a major contribution to the overall profile of your face; so therefore, when you alter the nasal shape you change the facial profile as well. However, the nose is not the only determinant of profile. The position of the chin is a major factor in balancing the overall shape of your face. In some cases, the mandible or jaw bone is not well developed, thus producing a receding or “weak chin”.

In such cases, I often will suggest an augmentation mentoplasty (chin implant) as this enhances not only the facial profile, but the overall result of your nasal operation. In some patients, Rhinoplastic surgery would be incomplete or unappealing if the chin were not augmented as well. I will show you an example of this during your next consultation.

To perform the procedure, I employ an inert rubber-like substance called silastic which is placed under the skin in the area of the so called “weak chin”. The usual entry route for the implant is through a small incision under the chin where it is very difficult to detect. The operation can be performed in conjunction with your Rhinoplasty or separately. It is completely painless, produces a minimal to moderate amount of swelling and requires a bandage in the area for two to three days. If performed on Friday, the patient can usually return to work on a Monday morning.

I consider Chin Augmentation a very necessary tool in facial cosmetic surgery as well as a wonderful addendum to Rhinoplastic surgery when needed. I will discuss this more thoroughly if warranted in your particular case.
